ISLAMABAD - National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has initiated inquiry against former minister for petroleum Dr Asim Hussain allegedly involved in massive corruption and LNG scandal in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources.
Senior officials of the NAB on Wednesday held six-hour long meeting with the Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khaqan Abbasi during which the minister briefed the visiting officials of NAB about LNG agreement.
sources informed that the Minister some one month earlier had written a letter to NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry inviting him for briefing over the report circulating in a section of media about LNG agreement terming the media reports as baseless. He had also warned of negative impact on the ongoing efforts to end the energy crisis in the country if NAB took action over the media reports.
Abbasi briefed the visiting NAB officials about price of the LNG agreed in the agreement, its approval from Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), other record and documents regarding the project.
The NAB team sought the record of important decision made while Dr Asim was holding the office of Secretary Petroleum and took it into custody. The minister for petroleum also directed the officials of the ministry for extending all sorts of cooperation with the NAB in the investigation of the case.
Sources said that NAB authorities will soon send a report of the findings to the NAB Rawalpindi Director General Zahir Shah who would furnish detailed inquiry report against Dr. Asim to the NAB chairman.
