RIYADH - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday held a meeting with Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in Riyadh to discuss important regional issues with a focus on the tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

The members of the Saudi cabinet were also present at the meeting. Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, Adviser on National Security Nasir Khan Janjua and PM’s Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi accompanied the prime minister.

Pakistan has always advocated the policy of promoting brotherhood among member states of OIC and it is concerned over the ongoing tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Earlier, Prime Minister Nawaz and Army chief General Raheel have arrived in Riyadh to play their role in bridging the gap between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The prime minister and army chief were given a warm welcome by the Riyadh governor.

Both the leaders discussed the regional situation with the Riyadh governor. On the other hand, General Raheel met Saudi Defence Minister in which he discussed the situation in the Middle East. The meeting also discussed the tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Presenting Pakistan’s opinion over Middle East situation, the army chief said that the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran has weakened the Ummah. Sources said that General Raheel stressed upon increasing contacts between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Nawaz will also visit Iran on Tuesday where he is scheduled to meet President Hassan Rouhani and other important personalities. PM will stress before Saudi and Iranian leaders that they should resolve their issues peacefully in the greater interest of the Muslim community.
