PESHAWAR – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police recovered a bomb near Gulbahar bus terminal on Thursday morning, a private TV channel reported.
According to police, a suspected terrorist identified as Banaras Khan was caught planting a bomb on the roadside near the bus stand. Explosives weighing 3 to 4 kilograms were placed in a thermos. Later, the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) arrived at the scene and neutralised the bomb.
The suspected terrorist has been shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation. The incident comes at a time when Pakistan is observing a day of national mourning for the 21 people killed when heavily armed gunmen stormed Bacha Khan University in Charsadda on Wednesday.
Flags are flying at half-mast on all government buildings inside and outside the country while a prayer ceremony will be held in the capital Islamabad.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has announced one-day mourning in the wake of the Charsadda attack on Wednesday. The prime minister – who had a telephonic conversation with Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif following the attack – said that the operation against terrorists must continue with full-swing.
Unidentified gunmen entered Bacha Khan University in Khyber Pakhtunkha’s Charsadda town on Wednesday and opened fire on students and faculty members as they gathered inside the university premises for a poetry recital to commemorate the death anniversary of the activist and leader whom the school is named after.
Provincial Minister Shaukat Yousafzai said that at least 25 people were killed in the attack. Rescue sources said that at least 60 people were injured. The Bacha Khan attack – which Amnesty International said could be branded a war crime – earned global condemnation including from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and neighbouring India.
