LAHORE – Administration of University of the Punjab has threatened faculty members and administrative staff to participate in a rally to be held on Wednesday in favour of interim Vice Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran, Daily Times learnt on Tuesday.
According to details, the offices of RO-1, RO-2, Controller of Examinations, and P&D have threatened the junior faculty members and lower staff (guards, sweepers, and gardeners) to participate in Wednesday’s rally, saying strict action will be taken against them if they fail to comply.
The faculty members have also been asked by the registrar and additional registrar to attend the rally. These two offices have also been pressurising the departmental heads to ensure participation of teachers and staff in the rally.
Earlier on Tuesday, PU teachers staged a peaceful protest on The Mall Road near the Punjab Assembly against Dr Kamran’s appointment on ‘look after’ basis. They said that the Higher Education Department (HED) had forwarded the summary of senior most Professor - Dr Taqi Zahid Butt - to be appointed as the interim VC.
The Chief Minister’s Office - however - they said had allegedly unlawfully forwarded the name of Dr Mujahid Kamran to Punjab Governor Rafique Rajwana to be appointed as the acting vice chancellor.
The recent appointment of Dr Kamran as the ‘look after’ Vice Chancellor has been challenged by Dr Asmatullah, one of the aspirants for the post of VC.
It may be mentioned here that Dr Kamran - who has enjoyed two tenures of four years each - is eyeing a third consecutive term. His second term ended on January 22, but he was assigned the look-after charge a day ahead of his retirement.
