PESHAWAR: At least 11 people were killed and several injured when a suicide bomber rammed his motorcycle into the vehicle of an assistant line officer of the Khasadar Force in the Wazir Dhand area in the Jamrud Tehsil of Khyber Agency on Tuesday, government official Asmatullah Wazir told the media.
The bomber riding an explosive-laden motorbike targeted the vehicle of Assistant Line Officer Nawab Shah, killing him along with 10 others. President of Tribal Union of Journalists Mehboob Shah is also among the dead. Around 10 to 14 kilograms of explosive material was used in the attack, said an official of the Bomb Disposal Squad.
Bomb disposal officials have found the head and legs of the bomber.
The agency administrator told reporters that Khasadar Force was the target of the bomber. He said that such acts could not shake their determination to fight terrorism. He said that those involved in this attack would be dealt with an iron hand.
Emergency has been declared at the city hospital. The injured were shifted to Jamrud and Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar. The death toll may rise as the condition of several victims was stated to be critical. The police and Khasadar Force cordoned off the area and started a search operation.
Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan’s Fazlullah group has claimed responsibility for the attack. “Although the exact nature of the blast is being ascertained, it appears to be a suicide attack,” said Khyber Agency Political Agent Shahab Ali Shah. He said that 11 people were confirmed to have killed in the blast. The attack took place near Karkhano in Jamrud, said Capital City Police Officer Mubarak Zeb Khan. Karkhano is tribal belt’s gateway to Peshawar.
President Mamnoon Hussain strongly condemned the attack. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan also condemned the incident. The governor directed the political agent of Khyber Agency to immediately submit a report on the blast. He directed the hospital authorities to provide best possible medical facilities to the injured.
