LAHORE: A full bench of Lahore High Court Monday directed Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) chairman to submit till January 15 a report on the enforcement of its ban on media coverage of London-based MQM chief Altaf Hussain’s speeches in the wake of his statements against state institutions, including army, Rangers.

PEMRA Chairman Absar Alam appeared before the court on Monday and said the complaints against stations TV alleged to have breached the ban have been referred to the regulator’s council of complaints in Karachi, which considers the responses of those channels that are accused of flouting the rules. He told the court that the council would meet on January 14 to assess whether the accused channels had indeed breached the ban and, if so, what punishment should be awarded against them. The bench granted an exception to Absar Alam from appearing personally in further hearings.
