LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif presided over a high level meeting which reviewed the pace of second phase of repair and rehabilitation of rural roads under Khadim-e-Punjab Rural Roads Programme.

Addressing the meeting, the chief minister said “Pakkiyan Sarkaan, Saukhay Painday” programme is a milestone in the upliftment of rural economy. He said that this project, which is worth Rs 150 billion, would change the lifestyle of the rural masses and such a massive programme for the repair and construction of rural roads is unprecedented in the history of the country.

“The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government considers progress and prosperity of rural areas its mission and has therefore started a big programme of construction and repair of rural roads under which carpeted roads of the highest standard are being constructed,” the CM said, adding that a network of hundreds of kilometre-long roads would be laid till 2017-18. He said that the programme would strengthen rural economy and reduce the distance between village and cities.

Shahbaz said that the programme is being implemented speedily so that best transport facilities could be available to the rural population at the earliest. Maintenance of the roads constructed under this programme is a national responsibility and overloaded vehicles would not be allowed on these roads, he added.

The chief minister directed that an effective system of axel load management should be evolved and the committee concerned should finalise its recommendation as soon as possible. He directed that DCOs and DPOs of the concerned districts should ensure indiscriminate action on overloading on rural roads constructed and repaired under this programme and a regular report be submitted as it is national obligation to protect the roads constructed with investment of billions of rupees.

IDA meeting: Meanwhile, the first meeting of Infrastructure Development Authority (IDA) was held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, which gave approval to its organisational structure and other matters. The meeting also gave conditional approval to six months’ budget of the authority.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said that Infrastructure Development Authority has been set up for ensuring speedy implementation of infrastructure development projects in the province and the authority will be organised on modern lines. He said that setting up of the authority is of vital importance for the implementation of infrastructure development projects, adding that the Punjab government has promoted the culture of timely and transparent completion of projects and IDA will have to play an active role in this regard.

Provincial Communication and Works Minister Tanvir Aslam Malik, inspector general, Planning and Development chairman and concerned secretaries also attended the meeting.

Condolence message: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has expressed deep sense of sorrow and grief over the death of wife of former Punjab governor Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa and mother of Dost Muhammad Khosa, Hassamud Din Khosa and Saifud Din Khosa.

He also condoled the death of the father of Soneri Bank Chairman Alauddin Farasta. In his separate condolence messages, the chief minister prayed for eternal peace of the deceased.
