ISLAMABAD: The government on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that more than 50,000 pornographic websites, 10,000 containing blasphemous content and at least 6,000 pages on social media carrying caricatures and 10 thousand proxies have been blocked.
Additional Attorney General Amir Rehman made the disclosure before the two-judge bench of Justice Aejaz Afzal and Justice Qazi Faez Isa when it took up two petitions filed by Qazi Hussain Ahmed (late) and Muhammad Hussain Mehnti wherein a complete ban on YouTube and abolishment of obscenity was sought. However, another petition filed by Barrister Zafarullah Khan was clubbed with the main petitions in which lifting of the ban on You Tube was requested.
AAG Amir Rehman informed the bench that the government has developed a complaint cell through which websites may be block immediately after a complaint. “A complaint cell comprising 25 persons is functioning in Pakistan Telecommunication Office which monitors the complaints,” he added. Justice Faez Isa observed that YouTube is different from other websites and should not be mixed with the rest of the websites as it is an educational site, and as far as explicit content is concerned, technical experts must come forward to resolve the issue.
He observed that YouTube is not a pornographic site. Justice Faez Isa further observed that millions of people upload and download knowledgeable content on YouTube, “but we are moving backwards”. He further observed if there is some objectionable content on YouTube then there is positive content too, and people should not watch objectionable things. However, Advocate Tofeeq Asif, counsel for Muhammad Hussain Mehnti, told the court that Pakistan is ideologically not a free society, and some content should not be shown openly in order to safeguard the young generation and values.
