LAHORE: A large number of students of Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) Lahore campus staged a protest on Monday in front of the canal campus and demanded the government to resolve their longstanding issues of degree verification.
The delegation of students met with Punjab Law Minister Rana Mashood who would visit the BZU sub-campus today (Tuesday) and would make an important announcement regarding the students’ concerns. The protest ended after the consultation but students announced to continue the protest until their demands were not met.
According to details, a large number of students of various departments came out holding placards and banners inscribed with slogans against Punjab government and BZU administration on the canal road in front of the BZU campus. Students also chanted slogans against the administration for not registering their degrees.
On the occasion, students said that it had been two months since the Prime Minster Nawaz Sharif took notice over the issue but no progress was made. They demanded that the Higher Education Commission team, under aegis of Zafar Iqbal Qureshi, visited the campus but was all in vain as there was no progress seen.
The student’s protest led to a traffic jam for several hours, where they maintained that they had to come out on roads for their demands to be heard.
On the occasion a student of BZU, Hira, said that the students were affected by the policies of the administration and the uncertainty of their degree verification had turned the situation even worst. She added that their future was in complete darkness and they were not getting jobs because of the issue. She demanded the concerned authorities to look into the matter and resolve it immediately.
Later, five to six students received minor burn injuries due to the burst of a gas balloon. Rescue 1122 shifted the injured to a nearby hospital.
