ISLAMABAD - Federal Minister for Interior Affairs Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Thursday came down hard on political opponents for criticism on implementation of the anti-terror National Action Plan (NAP).
The minister, while addressing a press conference, defended the government’s anti-terrorism policies as well his ministry’s performance. Nisar vehemently criticised Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leadership and the Sindh government for ‘politicking on serious national security issues.’
“War is not only fought with guns, it also has a physiological front but our politicians start criticising the government without realising that we all are in a state of war,” he said.
“They exactly do what enemy wishes for,” he said, adding that PPP is “spreading disappointment and despair”. The minister said that effectively implementation of NAP has yielded results.
“We have gained success in war against terrorism. Media can observe a visible decline in terrorism incidents that are now rare in Pakistan,” he said. “But we must keep in view the facts that they (terrorists) are on the run and therefore targeting soft targets like education institutions,” he noted.
Rejecting opposition’s criticism of NAP, the minister vowed to bring all facts and figures in this regard before the nation soon. About closure of education institutions over security concerns, the minister said schools should not be closed, adding that the federal government has not allowed closure of schools in Islamabad.
“We must fight against atmosphere of fear and terror and must point out those inciting panic among the nation.” The minister hailed Khyber Pakhtunkhawa government for taking measures to enhance security at educational institutions.
His criticism on political opponents came days after Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah called upon the minister to step down following January 20 militant attack on Bacha Khan University in Charsadda.
The fresh countywide fear of security for education intuitions is a consequence of the terrorist attack that left 21 people, most of them students, martyred in Charsadda.
