LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Maiza Hameed said on Monday that her party is extremely stringent in its policies against gender-based violence and no leniency would be shown to anyone found guilty of gender discrimination.

Talking exclusively to Daily Times, she said PML-N is working expeditiously to uplift the role of women in the society. “Under the leadership of Maryam Nawaz, we focus on educating women so they could identify their roles and help the country move towards the path to progress,” she said, adding that Pakistani women have a lot of potential and it is important to channelise their talents and utilise it for the betterment of the country, as they comprise 51% of the total population.

She said the recently held ‘Women on Wheels’ rally in Lahore, organised by the CM Special Monitoring Unit’s Law and Order Wing, provided women with free motorcycle lessons in order to raise awareness on gender-based violence and harassment on streets.

Also for the said purpose, the government has launched Violence Against Women Centres (VAWC) programme. Victims of violence, through this programme, can not only report the cases to VAWC through helpline (800) but can also get timely justice through fast track services of the department, the MNA elaborated.

On the directions of the chief minister, the SMU has started working in Lahore, Faisalabad and Sargodha. “VAWC will provide helpline and transport to the victims, while all facilities will be women-run and work 24/7.”

Explaining her party’s vision regarding the transformation of health sector, Maiza Hameed said the recently announced Prime Minister’s Health Programme in 23 districts will issue health cards to over 3.1 million families in accordance with NADRA records.

“Under the project, every registered family would be ensured financial help up to Rs 50,000 annually in case of admission in hospital for secondary treatment. Whereas, under the priority treatment programme, every family would have financial support of up to Rs 250,000 in case of hospital admission,” she added.

The MNA said facilitating the health sector is one of the top priorities of the government and under the leadership of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, health insurance cover to the downtrodden section of the society will be a major stride towards making Pakistan a welfare state, and the ‘Sehat Card’ would prove as a catalyst to achieve that cherished goal.

The PML-N leader said apart from introducing health facilities for the poor, the PML-N government had also announced Kissan Relief Package to cater to the farmers’ community, youth loan schemes to encourage the youngsters of the country and the Voluntary Tax Compliance Scheme to widen the tax net.

On a query, she said the PML-N government, ever since coming into power, has been subjected to baseless and cheap criticism, adding that it is unfortunate to see some parties taking undue advantage of their democratic right. “We respect and appreciate constructive criticism but baseless accusations and disrespect, for cheap publicity, is not acceptable. Instigating people on social media and delivering hate speeches would only increase violence and intolerance in the society,” she lamented.

The MNA said hunger for power has made the opposition parties, especially Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), to go to any extent in propagating against PML-N, adding that instead of playing a constructive role in helping the ruling party or bringing necessary provisions in KP, the PTI leadership seems more interested in practicing negative propaganda in the country. “We can also issue fact sheets every day on PTI’s performance in KP, but PML-N understands that positive development takes time, given the overall condition of the country,” she observed.
