LAHORE: An election tribunal on Thursday sought arguments on maintainability of an election petition filed by PTI candidate Abdul Aleem Khan alleging irregularities and pre-poll rigging in the NA-122 (Lahore) by-election. The tribunal comprising Judge Muhammad Rasheed Qamar heard the matter. During the hearing, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq’s counsel Khawaja Haris questioned the maintainability of the plea contended that it was not maintainable. However, Aleem Khan’s counsel Anees Hashmi opposed the contentions. At this, the tribunal directed both the parties to advance their arguments on maintainability while adjourning the matter till January 13. The tribunal also allowed two independent candidates Khurram Quershi and Manzoor Liaqur Rehman to become party whereas the tribunal decided to start ex-parte proceedings on applications of two other independent candidates after they failed to turn up on Thursday. Aleem Khan had lost the Oct 11 by-election to Ayaz Sadiq. The petitioner through his petition alleged that at least 30,000 votes had been cancelled and shifted from the NA-122 constituency before the by-poll.
